Ditch the stress & get your anxious dog the space they need

Sharing your life with an anxious, nervous, or reactive dog can be isolating and frustrating.

Other dog owners, people you meet on walks, and even friends and family don’t always understand the lengths you go to for your dog.

You can’t have a friendly chat with other dog walkers when you take your dog out, and sometimes you might experience confrontations that make leaving the house with your dog stressful.

You need help and support to bring back the joy to your dog walks and make life fun again.

I get it, that’s exactly where I was in 2012 when I started My Anxious Dog.

How did we get into the world of anxious dogs?

I’m Sarah, and this is Bella! Isn’t she adorable? To be honest, that’s a bit of a problem for us. Because she’s so pretty, people want to approach her all the time…. But she would rather they keep away from her. The last thing she wants is hands coming towards her face, and that’s how My Anxious Dog was born.

I got Bella as an 8 week old puppy, and we soon noticed that she was shy, a little nervous, and not keen on being too close to others. She had a traumatic birth, her mum had an emergency c-section which may have contributed to her anxiety.

See, dogs can be anxious or reactive for a range of reasons, but understanding why is less important than advocating for our dogs and creating a world in which they feel safe.

Bella was the puppy sitting under my chair at puppy classes, she was the dog who watched from afar and didn’t want in on the action. She loved trying new activities with me, we did agility, flyball, and lots of different training classes which she really enjoyed.

The turning point

One day, Bella was attacked by another dog, and that’s when she went from hanging back from the action and reacting to keep people and dogs away from her.

She was anxious and needed space. A dog trainer I worked with told me about using yellow dog accessories to show people my dog needed space. She recommended a yellow ribbon, but it only made her cuter… attracting even more people to come close and try to pet her!

So I tried other yellow anxious dog accessories, but they just didn’t stand up to Bella being a Spaniel. She might not want people anywhere near her, but she still wanted to scurry into bushes and get covered in muck!

The dog vest I got her was ruined in no time, and all of the anxious dog accessories I tried just felt cheap and nasty. I wanted something I felt proud to use and that was durable enough to stand up to all the wear and tear that comes with dog life.

So I started sourcing my own from suppliers I knew and trusted from my previous work.

What makes our anxious dog products different?

  • Different warning messaging to suit all dogs needs, including keep away, anxious, do not touch, and keep dogs away. They can be layered with different products to increase visibility.
  • Messaging is embroidered on both sides rather than printed, so it doesn’t fade and can be seen from every angle.
  • Our leads have padded handles and are strong & robust, so you feel secure and in control walking your anxious dog.
  • Our leads have a d-ring so you can attach a lead slip for extra visibility or a treat dispenser for easy access.
  • Our products are machine washable, so you can keep them looking good as new for the long-haul.

Do yellow anxious dog products work?

Don’t take it from us, we surveyed our community of nervous, anxious and reactive dogs to see how they feel about yellow space awareness accessories for their dogs.

Over 78% of owners surveyed who walk their #dogsinyellow report that they enjoy their walks more, feel more confident and calmer. This is thanks to people giving them and their dogs space.

66% of owners using yellow say it has reduced the number of people/dogs they come into contact with on walks.

Of the dog owners we surveyed, only 8% felt yellow warning accessories for dogs were ineffective.

91% of owners using yellow space awareness products for their dogs are working to increase awareness of what it means in their local area and online.

What if everybody knew what to do when they spot a dog in yellow?

Open tab

You probably had never heard of "reactive" dogs or "dogs in yellow" until your own dog began struggling with anxiety or reactivity.

Think back to life before your sensitive soul became part of your world. What did you think when you saw a barking, lunging dog and a frazzled owner desperately trying to control them?

Then one day everything changed.

We wish everybody knew how to make life easier for dogs in yellow,

So through compassionate awareness-raising, through our Yellow Army we will reach more unknowing dog parents, and spread the dogs in yellow understanding far and wide.

Why Yellow?

Open tab

Why "yellow" we are often asked?

Yellow is the official warning colour for caution. It is used by police on crime scenes and it is used in building sites when caution is needed.

Yellow is also a colour associated with cowardly, not being brave, jealousy and illness.

A pure Yellow is the most luminous of all the colours of the spectrum.

The human eye processes yellow first.

It’s the colour that captures our attention more than any other colour so it can be seen from a distance and that is why we use yellow.

But it's also a vibrant and warm colour that reflects the love, dedication and bond you hare with your dog.
