Pope Francis the patron saint of animals says we are “selfish” pet owners for not having children. Which is ironic considering he also has no children?

I don’t think anybody decides to have a dog instead of a child. You may want to have a puppy or dog, and you look after it, and the love that develops between you means it becomes part of your family.

I personally have no children because I couldn’t have a family. I didn’t decide to replace my longing for a child with a dog. I love dogs and have grown up with them since I was a child.

My first dog Timmy was a rescue dog.  I was around 20 years old, had my own house and wanted a dog. Not a selfish decision, a decision based around my love for animals.

I found the comments Pope Francis made as very out of touch in the modern world we now live in and very insensitive. It could possibly make women of the catholic faith that are unable to have children feel  quite shameful?

The benefits of pet ownership are huge. There are many scientific studies that prove that owning a pet can be good for your physical and mental health? It increases companionship, self-worth and self-esteem. They can help reduce depression, loneliness and isolation.

Bella helped my mental health after my husband had a life changing accident back in 2019. I know she played a vital role in my wellbeing.
