Should dogs wear coats?

Just like us, most dogs aren't really a big fan of wet weather, so a good quality raincoat can make their walks a lot more comfortable.

A waterproof raincoat for your dog can help keep your pet warm and dry even in the worst downpours.

Dogs wearing clothes is a topic that divides many dog owners.  On one hand, many dogs have waterproof fur and by nature, they have evolved to withstand many types of elements.  But the diversity of breeds and sizes of dogs means that some small breeds can find themselves in environments where they do not naturally thrive.

For dog owners, the main advantages of raincoats are that they limit the amount of water and mud the dog brings into the house.  For dogs that do not have water resistant coats, rain resistant clothing can reduce the amount of time and hassle spent drying off a dog after a walk.

For some dogs, walking in cold rain can present the risk of catching a cold or developing hypothermia.  This fact is true for young, elderly, short-haired, or long-haired dogs – especially when the weather is chilly.

Hair on dogs absorbs water like a sponge and these dogs require a waterproof dog raincoat as a minimum, as they get very cold when the hair absorbs the water.

Breeds that benefit from a waterproof dog coat are Cockapoos, Cavapoos, Labradoodles, Goldendoodles and Miniature, Toy and Standard Poodles.

A raincoat should not restrict your dog’s movement.  Some dog owners find that raincoats are stifling, so you should find a coat that is both water-resistant and breathable.

My Anxious Dog raincoats are a perfect fit, as the material is flexible and durable and very comfortable to wear. The well shaped front area of the raincoat protects the dog's important muscles from the wind and the rain while allowing your dog to walk and run freely.

Ultimately, whether or not your dog wears a raincoat is dependent upon your pet’s comfort as well as factors such as your dog’s age, breed, and the climate.  Not only does water-resistant rain gear minimize the amount of time spent drying your dog after a rainy walk, but a raincoat can help keep your dog warm, dry and healthy.

My Anxious Dog lightweight raincoat will keep your dog dry and visible during wet weather adventures, while letting other people know that your dog is anxious and needs space.

The raincoats have adjustable quick release side buckles rather than a Velcro strap making it more of a positive experience if you have a noise sensitive dog.

They also have a drawstring adjustment around the neck and a collar hole or harness zip for lead attachment.

A rain jacket for your dog won’t just help keep their fur from becoming soaked, but will also help stop them from shaking off all that excess water all over the inside of your car or house when you finish the walk!

If your dog gets wet they can become cold and start shivering, and before long an enjoyable walk can turn into a miserable experience.
